Inteha Ho Gayi Intezaar KI!
Looking outside the window right now, I get a sense of the massive rain dance party our lovely city will be having as the evening progresses. It is the last day of Ganpati visarjan ladies and gentlemen. Ganpati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi laukar ya! We will soon be surrounded by the sounds of Ganesh Arti being heard in every direction. And then, it will happen.
All Mumbai residents are aware that tonight is carnival night, and this is no ordinary carnival. Soon the streets will be filled with massive trucks carrying beautiful and humungous idols of Ganesh. And in front of them will be a sea of people dancing to Bollywood music. But what is bollywood music? Or Bollywood films for that matter?
This interesting debate was picked by me and my South Indian girlfriend the other day. And the revelation was rather interesting. Bollywood movies today are basically South Indian movies remade in hindi with punjabi songs. You can pick all of Salman's recent films to test this theory. And in theory all of Salman's recent films are the biggest money turners on the box office. So could south indian movies with north indian songs and a big star and no story be the ultimate bollywood formula?
Well Bollywood has a range too. Anurag Kashyap's movie THE GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS was also something I saw recently. It is a true example of a well made bad film. I have been a fan of his work in Dev D. His execution of the film is always impressive but the plots chosen are often not entertaining. We get it Anurag, you are a good director, but a good story is important too. The box office reports weren't off the chart and Bodyguard emerged a winner.
I don't what is sadder, the fact that a good director makes a bad film or that a bad film actually becomes a blockbuster. All I know is the last time I saw a good film come out bollywood was 3 Idiots. And today, when the whole city will be out dancing, all I wanted to do was go and watch a movie. And even now, we rely on Hollywood for something interesting. This has got to change!
